Cairiss' "FALL"

Cairiss is comprised of five persons from Southampton, United Kingdom and the sound they've crafted in their self-released digital debut "Fall" is airily dark and uplifting. Vocalist Freyja Brown alternates thoughtfully between light and swaying deliveries and throat-killing screams as her fellow musicians unveil creations of atmospheric post-black metal that alternate with her in routines sublime and spacious as well as punishing and claustrophobic in pace.
When Cairiss isn't putting a listener through stirring motions with carefully orchestrated swells and blasting furies, they seem happy to help one meander upright through warm waves of post-rock-inspired melody. In these intervals, the guitar work from Ethan Bishop and Martin Williams is methodically effervescent.
However, Bishop and Williams' shared timing is very tight, pausing only at times to interplay in light spaces and provide easy-to-follow if too-brief introduction to dark tableau. The soloing, both hard and soft, seems cut from a rather different and gorgeous cloth than is typical for many bands of this variety and provides intrigue to the ears!
All told, "Fall" is a wonderful example of independently produced atmospheric black metal that can inspire a great deal of emotional response in a listener and marks an excellent debut for Cairiss.
